IV. Questions In this lab we used both a catalyst and heat to increase the reaction rate. Explain how each of these increases the rate of reaction. Be specific in your answer. What would happen to the position of the equilibrium in this reaction if: a) 1. 2. H20 was removed continuously from the reaction mixture b) Extra catalyst was added. bubbles that were formed during the washing? added to the ester product. What are the two layers and why did this happen? 3. Why did you wash your ester product three times with aqueous NaHCOs? What were the 4. A student prepares their NMR sample and notices two layers are formed when the CDCl, is

Explanation / Answer

1.

Generally catalyst and temperature increases the rate of reaction. During the esterification, acid is used as catalyst it increases the rate of nucleophilic attack on electrophilic carbon. With the increasing temperature, rate of collisions also increases which in turn increases the rate of reaction.

2.

a)

By the removal of water, equilibrium shifts towards right side (product side ).otherwise backward reaction occurs

b)

Equilibrium shifts towards left, ie., ester hydrolysis

3.

To remove the any traces of unreacted acid left and bubbles were formed die go the evolution of CO2 gas.
