Question
An individual in your lab is working with a Pyrex beaker containing 500 ml of carbon disulfide (Class IB flammable liquid; flash point = -22 deg. F; OSHA PEL = 20 ppm TWA) and with 1.5 liter of 12.0 M hydrochloric acid in a 2L Erlenmeyer flask. Carbon disulfide vapors are heavier than air and they traveled from the open beaker along the benchtop and were ignited by a spark from an electric motor that is operating nearby. The burning vapors flashed back and ignited the material in the beaker. The burning CS2 ignited other combustible materials in the area and the fire is spreading. In a panic, your co-worker accidentally knocked over the flask of acid solution and it crashed to the floor and shattered, splashing HCl all over the pants and shoes of the individual. In the box below, please describe: (1) What hazards are present? (2) What do you think is the FIRST thing you should do to help? Second? Third? Fourth? (3) What actions would to take to mitigate/eliminate EACH of the hazards you identifed in part (1)?
Explanation / Answer
1. Hazards are;
A) fire can burn the electrical wires and causescexplosipn
B) CS2 is combustible gas and produces more heat
C) HCl burns skin and clothes
D) If HCl vapour goes to eyes; eyes will be damaged
2.
First; switch off the main switch
Second; open the emergency shower
Third; evacuate the room
Fourth;open carbon dioxide cylinders and spread CO2 to stop fire
3.
Stop working on benchtop.
Work inside the hood such that CS2 vapors cant come out.
