Question

1. 10 points. State one major difference between having a nitrogen atom in a ring structure and having an oxygen atom in that structure. 2. 10 points. Would you expect amines to be more soluble or less soluble in water than alcohols with comparable molecular weight ? Why? 3. 10 points. Will an amine be more soluble in acidic or basic solutions? Why What characteristic of amines allows them to form water solub 4. 10 points. salts? 5. 10 points. Describe two features of carboxylic acid molecules that give these acids very high boiling points

Explanation / Answer

1. Having nitrogen which being less electronegative than oxygen makes ring less electron deficient.

2. Amines are though soluble in water due to hydrogen bonding but they ate more soluble in alcohol because of hydrogen bonding and also alcohol being organic solvent. Like dissolves like.

3. Amine are proton acceptor ot lone pair doner hence are more soluble in acidic condition.

4. Because of basicity due to lone pair donation and due to hydrogen bonding they are water soluble.

5. They have strong hydrogen bonding more dipole moment and more molecular mass hence high boiling point.
