Question

For this week's experiment, why are you required to put moist cotton wool into a drying tube?
Hint: To Set a trap for HCl gas.
Could you tell me why is it?

Friedel-Crafts Acylation AIC o AIC AICh HCI An example of a Friedel-Crafts acylation to synthesize 1-phenylbutan-1-one is shown above. A Lewis acid-base complex forms between the aluminum (Ill) chloride and the acyl halide. The complex then dissociates to yield an acylium ion (R-CO") and AlCl. The aromatic ring then reacts with the electrophilic carbocation to produce an intermediate carbocation. Deprotonation then occurs to re- aromatize the ring, generating HCI and aluminum (IIl) chioride. Note that with Friedel-Crafts acylation, rearrangements do not occur

Explanation / Answer

Solution:-

mechanism of the reaction is provided in the question itself, in the second step of the reaction HCl elements. HCl is a gas and it is very irritating to the eyes and skin also it is a very strong acid but it easily dissolves in water in the ionized form. if the gas escapes from the flask it will be irritating to the others so to trap the gas moist cotton is used so that HCl will dissolve completely in the water and stay at cotton.
