The volume of the gas is 471 mL measured at 0.999 atm.Calculate the number of grams of sodium used in the reaction. (The vapor pressure of water at 23.0°C-0.0277 atm.) 891 Guia 4 5

Explanation / Answer

P(dry) of the H2 gas collected is P(total) - P(wet) = 0.999 atm - 0.0277 atm = 0.9713 atm.

PV=nRT

0.9713atm × 0.471L = n × 0.0821 L-atm/K × (23+273)K

0.9856 = n × 24.3016

n = 0.04 moles

It means, 0.04 moles of H2 is released.

Since, the given reaction is stoichiometric reaction, moles of Na required is double the number of moles of H2 produced.

Therefore, 0.08 moles of Na is required.

I.e., 0.08 × 23(MW of sodium) = 1.84 grams of sodium is required.
