Question
Silver ions can be precipaitate from aqueous solutions by the addition of aqeuous chloride.
AgNO3 (aq) + NaCl (aq) --> AgCl (s) + NaNO3 (aq)
Silver chloride is virtually insoulble in water so that they reaction appears to go to completion. A solution which contains 0.500g of sodium chloride (58.44 g/mol) is added to 25.0mL of 0.150M AgNO3 (169.87 g/mol) solution. Calculate the theoretical mass of silver chloride (143.33 g/mol) forms from this precipitaiton reaction.
(I got 1.23g of AgCl (s), but unsure if this is right)
Explanation / Answer
mol of NaCl = mass/MW = 0.5/58.44 = 0.00855
mol of AgNO3 = MV = 0.15*25*10^-3 =0.00375
ratio is 1:1 so
0.00375 mol of Ag+ limits
mol of AgCl precipitated = 0.00375
mass = mol*MW = 0.00375*143.33 = 0.53748 g of AgCl will form precipitate
