Question

6. Consider information. us solution of 4.5mM BaCl, Use Table 7-1 on page 147 of your text book for necessary 6.a) D etermine the ionic strength (u) of the solution. 100 points 6.b)Write the extended Debye Hückel equation and identify eac h component. 100 points. 6b) Determine the activity coefficient () of the Ba2+ in the solution. 120 points. 6.c) What would be the activity coefficient of the Ba2, if Na SO,is added to the above solution to make 4.5mM Na2S04.120 points 100 points 6.d) Would the addition of Na2SO, increase or decrease the solubility of BaClh?

Explanation / Answer

6. 4.5 x 10^-3 M BaCl2 solution

a. Ionic strength (u) = 1/2Ci.zi^2

u = 1/2(4.5 x 10^-3 x 2^2 + 2 x 4.5 x 10^-3 x 1^2]

   = 0.0135 M

b. Extended debye-Huckel equation for,

log[Y] for Ba2+ = -0.51 x 2^2 x sq.rt.(u)/[1 + 3.3 x 0.5 x sq.rt.(u)]

log[Y] for Cl- = -0.51 x 1^2 x sq.rt.(u)/[1 + 3.3 x 0.3 x sq.rt.(u)]

For Ba2+

[Y] for Ba2+ = inv log(-0.51 x 2^2 x sq.rt.(0.0135)/[1 + 3.3 x 0.5 x sq.rt.(0.0135)])

                    = 0.632

c) When Na2SO4 is added

when ionic strength increases, the activity coefficient will decrease.

d) The solubility of BaCl2 would increase by the addition of Na2SO4 because the ionic strength of the solution also increases.
