Question
coopainatlon number, bidentate ligand, tridentate ligand, hexadentate ligand, metallocene, d-d transition, charge-transfer transition Problem 2: Name the following coordination species, indicate their coordination number and shapes, and determine the oxidation number on the metal: [Co(NH [Co(NH3)3(OH2)31, [Co(SO)(NH3)s' [Ni(CN) 12, [Co(NH)&C;, [Ni(CN),1l2 3 6 Problem 3: 17.99 Problem 4: Read box 17.2 and answer the following: a) what are the ligands in hemoglobin(Hb) and oxygenated hemoglobin (Hb0,)?, b) what are the shapes of Hb and HbO2? c) why carbon monoxide is dangerous? Problem 5: Example 17.5 (be able to solve this problem)Explanation / Answer
a. [Co(NH3)6]3+ : The only ligand here is NH3, since its a neutral ligand, it would named amine. There are six of these, so hexa ammine. The metal is cobalt and the complex is an ion with 3+ charge coming from the metal. So the name would be Hexaamine Cobalt (III) ion. The shape of this complex would be octahedral. The coordination number is 6 as the metal is linked to 6 ligands and the oxidation number is +3.
b. [Co(NH3)3(OH2)3]3+ : The ligands here are NH3 and OH2, since they are both neutral ligands, they are called amine and aqua. The amine comes first as it is alpahabetically the first one. So triamine, di aqua. The metal is cobalt and the complex is an ion with 3+ charge coming from the metal. So the name would be Triaminetriaquacobalt (III) ion. The shape of this complex would be octahedral. The coordination number is 6 as the metal is linked to 6 ligands and the oxidation number is +3.
c. [Co(SO4)(NH3)5]+ : The ligands here are NH3 and SO42-, NH3 would be amine and SO42- would be sulfato (as anions ned with O for anion ligands). The amine comes first as it is alpahabetically the first one. So pentaamine, sulfato. The metal is cobalt and the complex is an ion with + charge coming from the metal. So the name would be Pentaaminesullfatocobalt (I) ion. The shape of this complex would be octahedral. The coordination number is 6 as the metal is linked to 6 ligands and the oxidation number is +3. Co has charge +3 and SO42- So overall chage is +1.
d. b. [Ni(CN)4]2- : The only ligand here is CN-, since its an anion, it would named cyano. There are 4 of these, so tetracyano. The metal is Nickel and the complex is an anion with 2- charge. Charge on metal would be +2 as toatl charge on ligands would be -4 and overall then becomes -2. So the name would be TetracyanoNickilate (II) ion. The shape of this complex would be square planar. The coordination number is 4 as the metal is linked to 4 ligands and the oxidation number is +2.
