Question

emperature Tutored Practice Problem 15.4.3 COUNTS TOWARS CRAD Predict and calculate the effect of temperature change on an equilibrium system to form CH2a2. The equilibrium constant, KP' for this reaction is 9.52×10-3 at 350 K. The standard enthalpy change for this reaction (AH) is 18.8 kJ/mol. (a) Predict the effect on the production of CH,Cl, when the temperature of the equilibrium system is decreased. (b) Use the van't Hoff equation to estimate the equilibrium constant for this reaction at 272 K K, at 272 K Show Approach FS F8 2 3 4

Explanation / Answer

For the given reaction,

(a) This is an endothermic reaction, heat is needed to proceed the reaction

So, when temperature is decreased, the direction of the reaction would me towards reactant end, such that more of CH2Cl2 would go to form CH4 and Cl2. CH2Cl2 concentration would decrease.

(b) Kp = 9.52 x 10^-2 at T2 = 350 oC + 273 = 623 K

Kp = ? and T1 = 272 oC + 273 = 545 K

dH = 18800 J/mol

R = gas constant

using,

ln(k2/k1) = dH/R(1/T1 - 1/T2)

ln(9.52 x 10^-2/k1) = 18800/8.314[1/545 - 1/623]

kp at 272 oC = 5.663 x 10^-2
