Question

1) I am considering remodeling my house, and have a 55 L tank of nitrogen in my shed. This tank contains 15 kilograms of nitrogen gas and can withstand a pressure of 150 atm before exploding. If I were to "accidentally heat this tank to a temperature of 815 degrees Celsius, would this tank explode and save me the demolition cost for my coming addition? 2) My pet squirrel Randy ate a 12 gram carbon dioxide paintball cartridge. Given that the normal body temperature of a squirrel is 37 degrees Celsius and his internal pressure is typically 1.1 atm, what will the final volume of the squirrel be if the painthall cartridge opens up in his belly? 3) I don't like my next door neighbor, but he doesu t know that. He's a stuntman, and 3) I don't like my next door ncighbor, but he docsn' a stuntman, and recently hired me to fill the airbag into which he wi fall during a "falling out of a building" stunt. I have filled the 144000 liter airbag with 1500 kg of nitrogen gas at a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius. Given that my neighbor will only survive the fall if the pressure inside the airbag is between 112 and 14 atm, should I expect to get a new neighbor in the very near future?

Explanation / Answer

1) According to ideal gas equation PV = n RT

Here V = 55 L , R = 0.0821 l atm/mol K , T = 1088 K

1 g nitrogen = 0.07139 moles so 15000 g nitrogen = 1070.85 moles

n = 1070.85

P = n R T / V

= 1070.85 x 0.0821 x 1088 K / 55

= 1739 atm

since the maximum pressure the tank can with hold is 150 atm . yes the tank will explode.

2) Here 1 mole of CO2 has 44.01 grams of mass

so 12 g of CO2 = 12 / 44.01 = 0.27 moles

n = 0.27 moles

P = 1.1 atm

T = 37 + 273 = 310 K

R = 0.0821 l atm/mol K

PV = n R T

so V = n R T / P

= 0.27 x 0.0821 x 310 / 1.1

= 6.25 L

3) 1 g nitrogen = 0.07139 moles so 1500000 g nitrogen = 107091 moles

1500 kg nitrogen contain 107091 moles

n = 107091

T = 35 + 273 = 305 K

PV = nRT

P = n R T / V

= 107091 x 0.0821 x 305 / 144000

= 18.6 atm

Since the neighbour is supposed to survive only between 1.2 and 1.4 atm.

and the pressure obtained is 18.6 . he will not survive the fall.
