The aspirin tablets are chemically acetylsalicylic acid. These tablets are not pure , as if only aspirin is present the pill will not hold its shape. The acid can irritate the stomach of the patient , so generally buffering agents called as bufferins are added into the pills .

Some pills such as Excedrin contain a combination of acetylsalicylic acid , caffeine , and acetominophen .
