Question
Page 3 of 9 PROBLEM 2 (10 points) Acetone (C3H6O) is a common industrial solvent, and it is also present as the active ingredient in some household products (some nail polish remover and paint thinner formulations are comprised entirely of acetone). The following data are provided (for T=25°C). Formula Molecular weight Liquid density (g/mL) Saturated vapor pressure (atm) Henry's Law Constant (atm-m'/mole 3.88x10 C3HsO 58.08 0.784 0.305 Assume that a forgetful person absentmindedly neglected to place the lid on a bottle of acetone with a liquid volume of 250 mL before placing it in an unventilated, tightly sealed, storage closet (gas volume of storage closet = 10 m, T=25°C). What will be the gas-phase concentration of acetone after equilibrium is reached. Express your answer in units of mg/m.Explanation / Answer
Saturated vapor pressure of gas, Pg = 0.305 atm
Liquid volume, VL = 250 mL = 250 x 10-6 m3
Gas Volume, VG = Volume of room = 10 m3
Henry’s law constant, Kh = 3.88 x 10-5 atm.m3-soln/mol-gas
Kh = Pg * VL / moles of gas
Moles of gas = 0.305 * 250 x 10-6 / 3.88 x 10-5
= 1.97
Mass of gas = 1.97 * 58.08 = 114.14 g
Concentration of gas phase acetone at equilibrium = 114.14 g * 1000 mg/g / VG
= 11414 mg/m3
