Question
1. Meet with the members of your team and write a procedure to collect and analyze four drinking water samples. Your procedure must include glassware, equipment, chemicals, chemical names and concentrations that will be used in lab to analyze the water samples. It may be in the form of a flowchart. Do a good job drafting it – you will use your own procedure in lab and it will be the beginning of your formal lab report. • Prepare a data table to record the data of the sample collection. • Prepare a data table to record all of the data during lab. If you have written the procedure well, it and the data you obtain in lab while testing the sample will provide the answers to all of the following questions by the end of the testing of the samples. Your plan and data tables should address all of the following questions: a. How much sample is needed in order to perform all the tests? b. What is the source of the sample? c. When was the sample collected? d. How much sample was collected? e. What type of container was used to collect the sample? f. What was the approximate temperature of the sample when it was collected? g. How was the sample stored after collection? h. How cloudy is your sample? i. What pretreatment of the sample is necessary? j. Does your sample smell? k. How acidic is the sample? l. What is the hardness of the water? m. How many dissolved solids are in the sample? n. How alkaline is your sample? o. What is the nitrate level in your sample? p. How much chloride is in your sample? The goal is to write a procedure/data tables that answer the questions above, I am lost on this
Explanation / Answer
Apparatus required
4 clean glass bottle 50 ml Burette, 20 ml Pipette, 250 ml Conical flask, 100 ml Beaker, 250 ml beaker, Glass funnel.
Procedure
1 Clean and dry the glass bottles for the sample collection from 4 different site.
2. amount of sample should be 250ml so that all the experiment can easily conduct.
3. The samples are preseerved in such a way that it cannot get contaminated.
4. The samples should be collected at normal temperature (25 C)
3. After collection of sample its prelimenary exaination can be done.
4. Its odour, cloudyness can be determined by physically monitoring.
5. Acidity of the each sample dettermined by using pHmeter. by taking 20 ml of sample and examine.
6. For the determination of hardness of water.
6.1 first make a standard EDTA solution
6.2 Take 20 ml of sample into a conical flask.
6.3 Add 5 ml of buffer solution and a pinch of Eriochrome Black-T and titrate it with EDTA.
6.4 End point is detected by change of blue color into wine-red color.
