Question

b) When heating your dolomite samples, should you leave the crucible cover on, off, or slightly ajar? Explain 5. (a) Write a balanced chemical equation for the thermal decomposition of magnesium carbonate Indicate the physical state of each reactant and product, using the following abbreviations: (aq) for aqueous solution, (s) for solid, (O for liquid, and (g) for gas (b) What are the molar masses of magnesium carbonate, magnesium oxide, and carbon dioxide? Record these masses using the number of significant figures specified by your laboratory instructor e When magnesium carbonate is thermally decomposed, what is the theoretical mass percent of carbon dioxide driven off?

Explanation / Answer

B) when dolomite is heated the crucible jar should be slightly sjar because dolomite is decomposing in very high temperature in presence of CO2 .so,in order to avoid effect of CO2 ,air should be present there.apart from this decomposition of carbonates is always done in limited supply of oxygen.therfore we cannot open the jar.so, slightly ajar is best condition for heating of dolomite.

5 a) when MgCO3 is decompsed it gives Magnesium oxide and carbon dioxide.

Mg(CO3) (s)------>Mgo(s) +CO2(g)

5 b) 84.313 g of MgCO3 gives 40.3044 g of Mgo and 44.1g of CO2.
