I did an experiment: oxidation of O- chlorotoluene. I placed 3 grams of potassium permanganate, 1ml of O- cholortoluene 35 mL of water into a roundbottom flask and let it reflux for an 1hr30min. Followed the procedures through and filtrate was brown and added a scoop of sodium bisulfate . When the HCl was added a greenish white precipitate formed and the end product was still brown. You cannot conclude that the product was not formed just because it didn't turn white. Did you analyze the prooduct to confirm that it was not formed? You probably did not get a white precipitate because of possible impurities present along with the product. So you should purify to get rid of impurities and the pure product may give you the desired white color.
