Question

For each of the following % mass/volume solutions, show the calculation (equation with all units) for the preparation of each solution. Then, describe how you would make the solution in an appropriate container. 40 ml of 3% CuS0_4 solution 200 mL of 8% NaCI solution 0.75 L of 5% dextrose (aka glucose) solution 10 ml of 1.25% NaOH solution For each of the following molar solutions, show the calculation (equation with all units) for the preparation of each solution. Then, describe how you would make the solution in an appropriate container.3 L of 0.5 M CuSO_4 solution (The MW of CuSO_4 is 250 g/mol) 80 ml of 0.1 M NaCI solution (The MW of NaCI is 58.5 g/mol) 125 mL of 10 M NaOH solution (The MW of NaCI is 40 g/mol) 400 mL of 50 mM glucose solution (The MW of glucose is 180 g/mol)

Explanation / Answer

a) we know that

moles = molarity x volume (L)

so

moles of CuS04 = 0.5 x 3

moles of CuS04 = 1.5

now

mass = moles x molar mass

so

mass of CuS04 = 1.5 x 250

mass of CuS04 = 375 g

so

the steps are

i) take 375 grams of CuS04 and add it into a container

ii) add water and make the volume to 3 L

b)

moles = molarity x volume (ml) / 1000

moles of NaCl = 0.1 x 80 / 1000

moles of NaCl = 8 x 10-3

mass of NaCl = moles x molar mass

mass of NaCl = 8 x 10-3 x 58.5

mass of NaCl = 0.468 g

so

the steps are

i) take 0.468 g of NaCl

ii) add water and make the volume to 80 ml

c)

moles of NaOH = 10 x 125 / 1000

moles of NaoH = 1.25

now

mass of NaOH = 1.25 x 40

mass of NaOH = 50 g

so

the steps are

i) take 50 g of NaoH

ii) add water and make the volume to 125 ml

d)

moles of glucose = molarity x volume (ml) / 1000

moles of glucose = 50 x 10-3 x 400 / 1000

moles of glucose = 0.02

mass of glucose = 0.02 x 180

mass of glucose = 3.6 g

so

the steps are

i) take 3.6 grams of glucose

ii) add water to make the volume 400 ml
