Question
Write the basic, unbalanced chemical equations for the redox reactions that are described:
A. When aqueous iron (II) is mixed with aqueous permanganate ion (MNO4-), the iron (III) is oxidized to iron (III) and the manganese in permanganate is reduced to monatomic manganese (II) ion.
B. In dilute nitric acid solution, zinc metal is oxidized to Zn2+ and reduction of the nitrogen in nitrate leads to formation of ammonium inon.
C. When solid iodine is mixed with nitric acid, if forms periodate ion and the nitrogen in nitrate is reduced, forming nitrogen dioxide.
For A I got: Fe2+ (aq) +MnO4-(aq) = Fe3+(s) +Mn2+(s)
For B I got: HNO3-(aq) + Zn(s) =Zn2+(s) +NH4+(aq)
For C I got: I2(s) HNO3- (aq) =IO4-(aq) +NO2(aq)
-I just want to know if I am doing this correctly
Explanation / Answer
A) Basic unbalanced chemical equation for the reaction between ferrous ion and permanganate ion is
Fe+2 (aq.) + MnO4-(aq.) ---------------> Fe+3 (aq.) + Mn+2 (aq)
The balanced chemical equation for the above reaction in acidic medium is
5Fe+2 (aq.) + MnO4-(aq.) +8H+ ---------------> 5Fe+3 (aq.) + Mn+2 (aq) +4H2O
B) Zn + HNO3 -------------> Zn(NO3)2 + NO + H2O
Dilute and cold nitric acid reacts with zinc and releases nitric oxide,along with the formation of zinc nitrate and water.
Balanced equation for the above reaction is
3 Zn + 8 HNO3 ----------------> 3 Zn(NO3)2 + 2 NO + 4 H2O
C) Iodine reacts with concentrated nitric acid and forms the products like IO3- and NO2 along with the formation of water.
Basic unbalanced equation is :
HNO3 + I2--> HIO3 + NO2 + H2O
Balanced chemical equation for the above reaction is
10 HNO3 + I2-->2 HIO3 + 10 NO2 + 4 H2O
