Question

Mark which statement are True (T) and False (F) regarding association of kinetochore microtubules.

( ) At prophase in Mitosis, microtubules associate with kinetochore.

( ) At metaphase in mitosis microtubules are associated with only one of the kinetochores of each chromosome.

( ) At metaphase I of meiosis, microtubules are associated with both the kinetochores of each chromosome.

( ) At metaphase II of meiosis, microtubules are associated with both the kinetochores of each chromosome as during metaphase of mitosis.

TFFT

Explanation / Answer

Please find the answer below:

Choice 1 is correct.

Explanation: Kinetochore represents the point of attachment of the sister chromatids of the chromosomes. Thus, there is a single kinetochore in each chromosomes. During mitosis, the kinetochore are two in number in the homologous chromosomes since there are two chromosomes lying together. However, during meiosis I, reductional division promotes reduction in number of kinetochores as well. Thus, metaphase in mitosis microtubules are associated with two of the kinetochores of each chromosome. However, this does not hold true for non-reductional cell division i.e. meiosis II and mitosis.
