Question

Use the following Fe-Fe3C phase diagram to answer question 6-10 The Fe-Fe_2 C phase diagram a portion of the Fe-C diagram). The vertical line at 6.67% C is the stoichiometric compound Fe_2 C. Steel containing 0.8% C is classified as Hypoeutectic Hypereutectic Hypoeutectoid Hypereutecoid Maximum solubility of Carbon in gamma - austenite in Fe-Fe_3 C is 0.77%C 2.11%C 0.0218%C 4.3%C What phase(s) are present at 1000 degree C for AISI steel 1090 (0.90%C) alpha -ferrite gamma -austenite both alpha -ferrite and gamma -austenite None of the above Amount of alpha - ferrite in AISI 1060 steel at 725 degree C is 50.5% 49.5% 91.2% 0.77% Eutectoid reaction in this phase diagram takes place at 4.3%C 2.11%C 0.77%C None of the above

Explanation / Answer

Picture shows the equilibrium diagram for combinations of carbon in a solid solution of iron. The diagram shows iron and carbons combined to form Fe-Fe3C at the 6.67%C end of the diagram. The left side of the diagram is pure iron combined with carbon, resulting in steel alloys. Three significant regions can be made relative to the steel portion of the diagram. They are the eutectoid , the hypoeutectoid , and the hypereutectoid . The right side of the pure iron line is carbon in combination with various forms of iron called alpha iron (ferrite), gamma iron (austenite), and delta iron. Allotropic changes take place when there is a change in crystal lattice structure. From 2802º-2552ºF the delta iron has a body-centered cubic lattice structure. At 2552ºF, the lattice changes from a body-centered cubic to a face-centered cubic lattice type. At 1400ºF, the curve shows a plateau but this does not signify an allotropic change. It is called the Curie temperature, where the metal changes its magnetic properties.

16) According to the phase diagram. the steel containing 0.8% C is classified as hypo-eutectoid.The answer should be (C).

17) Maximum solubility of Carbon in gamma-austentie in Fe-Fe3C is 4.3% C. answer should be (D).

18) Both alpha - ferrite and gamma- austentie phases are presented at 1000 celsius for AISI steel 1090 ( 0.90% C)

19) Amount of alpha ferrite in AISI 1060 steel at 725 Celsius is 0.77%C.

20) Eutectoid reaction in this phase diagram takes place at below to 2% C.so it can be 0.77% C.
