Explanation / Answer
You visit Colorado for vacation and drive through a beautiful valley. How could you determine if the valley was initially formed by a glacier or by a river?
There is distinct feature formed by river by a glacier and river. By comparing both types of features of valley we can identify whether valley formed by river and glacier. Shape of valley is ‘V’ shape if it formed by river, and it is ‘U’ shape if formed by glacier due to more erosion by glacier.
2.)This rock you just described in number 1 went from being an igneous rock to a sedimentary rock. Now that it is a sedimentary rock, could it ever become an igneous rock again? Explain
Igneous rocks, which are formed from magma cooling underground, or lava above ground. When igneous rocks are exposed to weathering and erosion, they break down into smaller particles that are transported by wind and water to a place of deposition, where they can form into sedimentary rock strata. Direct transformation of Igneous rock to sedimentary not possible but from indirectly through metamorphic rock transformation sedimentary rock can back to again igneous rock is possible. These are known as rock cycle.
3. What about a sedimentary becoming a metamorphic rock instead? Explain
. Sedimentary becoming a metamorphic rock instead of other types sedimentary rock depending of its chemical make-up, the sedimentation process, and organic material. There are basic three types of sedimentary rocks, which can form instead of metamorphic. Clastic sedimentary rocks, chemical rock and organic rock can form.
4. What about a sedimentary rock becoming a different type of sedimentary rock? Explain.
There are three basic types of sedimentary rocks.
Clastic sedimentary rocks such as breccia, conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale are formed from mechanical weathering debris.
Organic sedimentary rocks such as coal, some dolomites, and some limestones, form from the accumulation of plant or animal debris.
Chemical sedimentary rocks, such as rock salt, iron ore, chert, flint, some dolomites, and some limestones, form when dissolved materials precipitate from solution.
5. In sentence form, describe the difference between these three commonly properties of minerals: cleavage, fracture, and crystal structure. (Crystal structure is also commonly known as form or habit)
Properties of minerals:
Cleavage:
The tendency of a mineral to break along flat planar surfaces as determined by the structure of its crystal lattice. These two-dimensional surfaces are known as cleavage planes and are caused by the alignment of weaker bonds between atoms in the crystal lattice
Fracture:
Cleavage planes are distinguished from fracture by being smooth and often having reflective surfaces. Fracture is the way a mineral breaks other than along a cleavage plane.
Crystal structure
crystal structure is the ordered arrangement of ions or molecules in a crystalline material
