a. briefly explain:

(i)why are the coordination compounds that contain the following specific central transition metal ions Ag1+, Hg2+, Mo6+, Nb5+, Mn7+, Y3+, Zr4+ are colorless

(ii)among this group of seven metal ions, there are two groups. organize the ions into the two groups and ID each group

b. very briefly explain using complimentary colors the reason that tree leaves change color from green in the spring/summer to yellow/organge/red in the fall

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

a)

i) Ag+1 = It is colorless due to the absence of unpaired electrons

Hg2+ = It is colorless due to the absence of unpaired electrons

Mo+6 = It is colorless due to the absence of unpaired electrons

Nb+5 = It is colorless due to the absence of unpaired electrons

Mn+ = It is colorless due to the absence of unpaired electrons

Y3+ = It is colorless, because it absorbs radiation of UV light

Zr4+ = It is colorless due to the absence of unpaired electrons

b) Chlorophll breaks down. But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorphyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor.
