Explanation / Answer

1.) All the salts containing NO3- are water soluble.

The reaction between A (KIO3) and C (Cu(NO3)2) gave clear blue solution

KIO3 (aq) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) -------> CuIO3 (aq) blue colored + KNO3 (aq)

The solution after reaction remained clear which means that there was no precipitaion and hence NO3- salts are soluble in water.

The reaction between B (BaCl2) and C(Cu(NO3)2) gave clear blue solution

BaCl2 (aq) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) -----> CuCl2 (aq) blue colored + Ba(NO3)2 (aq)

The solution after reaction remained clear which means that there was no precipitaion and hence NO3- salts are soluble in water.

2.) To decide if Hg2Cl2 is water soluble, we need to select the compounds having Hg22+ as cation or Cl- as counter anion in the other reacting species. Both the compounds used initially must be water soluble.

Hg2(NO3)2 (aq) + BaCl2 (aq) ----------------> Hg2Cl2 + Ba(NO3)2 (aq)

If the resulting solution is cloudy with a precipitate we can decide that Hg2Cl2 is water insoluble. If the solution remains clear even after reaction, we can say that Hg2Cl2 is water soluble.
