Explanation / Answer
Some scientists are concerned that genetic engineering allows humans to tamper with evolution.
Some scientists argue that genetic engineering allows humans to tamper with evolution, but that is not correct. Genetic engineering is the process in which genes are manipulated. Genes can be manipulated in a number of ways, but genes can only be manipulated when they are present. This means, genetic manipulation is the modification of existing genes. These existing genes are modified through various methods such as micro injections or gene guns manipulation or even electrical or chemical orations. Mostly, in genetic engineering, there is transfer of gene involved from a host cell to a recipient cell. These transfers are facilitated by the use of vectors who carry the DNA from the host to the vector. Genetic engineering is done so that desirable characters can be introduced in an individual who is aimed to be modified. These modifications are also done by either deletion of target genes or addition of required genes. These genes can be from the same individual or a different species.
Evolution is defined as the process by which an organisms DNA changes or evolves through a number of generations. This occurs through either gene flow or natural selection or genetic drift. This results in various traits that are formed due to such changes in genes. Some examples of evolution are the Darwin's finches . Such evolution occurs because one trait becomes more preferred over the other and thus after years of generations, these prevalent changes are seen. This also emphasises on the idea of survival of the fittest. Evolution does not help in production of fit organisms, but it allows choosing of the most fit organisms by eradicating the less fit organisms.
Genetic engineering acts in a way that is similar to evolution, by causing variations in species. Natural selection can also be summed up species variation in correspondence to mate selection that results in adapted species. This in turn establishes that genetic engineering is the human developed form of evolution / natural selection and does not tamper with evolution, since ultimately both are causing adapted species.
