Such an equation describes a reaction in a concise way, using just a few symbols and numbers. Before we evaluate or try to understand a picture, however, we must know something about the objects in the photograph. In the case of a chemical equation, we must know something about the substances involved before we can fully understand the equation. In this experiment, you will study some ionic compounds. lonic compounds form when the bonding species are ions instead of neutral atoms. lons are chemical species that have either a positive or negative charge. A positively charged ion, called a cation, has fewer electrons than protons in its component atom(s). A negatively charged ion, called an anion, has more electrons than protons in its component atom(s). Metal atoms usually form cations, and non-metal atoms usually form anions. Many anions are polyatomic, which means that they are composed of several bonded non-metal atoms. Anions and cations are attracted and bound to each other because of their opposite electrical charges. For example, potassium bromide is an ionic compound containing potassium ions (K+) and bromide ions (Br).
