Question

1. Jan hears about a new diet plan that she is very excited about as it promises that she will lose weight very quickly. The plan excludes almost all fat from the diet. Based on what you have learned about lipids, what advice would you give to Jan concerning this diet?

2. Chad is looking for a snack that would contain both proteins and lipids. He went to the market and was debating between a snack of peanut butter, orange juice, celery, or an apple. What snack should Chad purchase to meet his nutritional needs? Explain your answer using your experience with the exercises performed in this experiment. (Experiment is on lipids and proteins.)

Explanation / Answer

1. For Jan intending to reduce weight quickly by intaking a fat free diet. Lipids which includes fats are the main sources for storing energy and providing energy and act as building blocks for cell membranes. Avoiding fats completely may harm the body and thus it would not be adviced to opt for a diet which is fully fat-free in nature.

2. For Chad looking to purchase a snack which contains both protein and lipids, he should opt for peanut butter. It has lipids (is a vegetable source) and also contains about 1 quarter amount of protein per 100 g butter. So it satifies both of his nutritional requirements he is looking for in the snack.
