Question
In lab you determined the volume of 12 marbles and the mass of 18.0 mL of water. Use the following data, which should closely approximate your results, to answer the questions below. What are the densities determined from the data above? The number of moles of water present in 18.01 g of water is Use scientific notation for the number of water molecules in 18.01 g of water. (Enter your answer using the format 2.2e21 for 2.2 Times 10^21) What is the mass of a single molecule of water? How many water molecules would have the mass of one marble? Neglect empty space between molecules and calculate the average volume of a water molecule. What is the average volume of a marble? How many water molecules could fit in the same volume as one marble?Explanation / Answer
a)What are densities determined from the data above?
Solution-
Given-
Mass of water = 18.01 g
Volume of water = 18.0 ml
Mass of 12 marble = 49.68 g
Mass of 1 marble = 49.68 g/12 = 4.14 g
Volume of marble = 19.6 ml
We know the equation
Density = mass in g/Volume in ml
Density of water = mass/ volume = 18.01 g/18.0 ml = 1.0 g/ml
Density of marble = mass/ volume = 4.14 g/19.6 ml = 0.211g/ml
b)The number of moles of water present in 18.01 g of water is
Solution-
Given-
Mass of water = 18.01 g
Mol.wt of water = 18
No of mole = wt. in g/mol.wt = 18.01/18 = 1.00 mole of water
C) Use scientific notation for the number of water molecule in 18.01 g of water
Solution-
Given
Mass of water = 18.01 g
Avogadro’s no = 6.022 e 23
No of moles of water = 18.01g/18 = 1.00 mole of water
Number of of water molecule in 18.01 g = No of mole * Avogadro’s no = 1.00 mole *6.022 e 23
Number of of water molecule in 18.01 g = 6.022 e 23
d)What is the mass of single molecule of water
Solution-
Given
Molar mass water = 18 g/mol
1 mole = 6.02 x 10^23 molecules
Mass of water = Molar mass/ Avogadro’s no = 18 / 6.02 x 10^23
= 2.99 x 10^-23 g is the mass of one molecule
e) How many water molecule would have the mass of one marble?
Solution-
Mass of one marble = 4.14 g
Mass of water molecule = 18.0 g
No. of water molecule = 4.14g/18.0g = 0.23 molecule of water is the mass of one marble
