Question
Histone deacetylase (HDAC) has been shown to be capable of either increasing decreasing gene expression, depending on the protein on which it acts (histones versus other proteins involved in gene expression). Given this information, how might HDAC inhibitors act to treat some form of cancer? Select all plausible explanations. HDAC inhibitors may decrease expression of anti-division genes. HDAC inhibitors may increase expression of anti-division genes. HDAC inhibitors may decrease expression of pro-division genes. HDAC inhibitors may increase expression of pro-division genes.Explanation / Answer
Histone proteins bring about various structural and functional changes in the nuclear processes. This is done by undergoing nuclear modifications. HDAC inhibitors have been shown to have anti Tumor all effects in vitro. The HDAC inhibitors ae also known as growth blockers. They do so by stopping the cancer cells from dividing. In order to stop the cell from growth, there is requirement to stop its division. Hence, HDAC inhibitors would increase the work of the anti division genes to the Tumor suppressor genes. Also, since division has to be stopped in order to inhibit the cancer cells from growing, pro division genes have to be inhibited. Hence the answer is :
Option B : increase expression of anti division genes.
Option C : decrease expression of anti division genes.
