. [1.5 pts] A certain sample was analyzed by proton NMR and found to consist of three isomeric lactones (lactone Ahas a boiling point of 173°C; lactone B has a boiling point of 143°C; lactone C has a boiling point of 185°C). Rank these compounds in order of relative GC retention times (longest retention time first).
1.5 pts] A certain sample was analyzed by proton NMR and found to consist of three isomeric lactones (lactone A has a boiling point of 173°C, lactone B has a boiling point of 143°C, lactone C has a boiling point of 185 C) these compounds in order of relative GC retention times (longest retention time first) 1. RankExplanation / Answer
In a GC the separation takes place by retention of the compound in the stationary phase and its equilibrium in the vapour phase. Due to this teh compounds that have lower boiling point elute faster than those that have higher boiling point. So Lactone C which has the highest boiling point will have the longest retention time. The lactone A which has the next highest boiling point will have the next highest retention time and the lactone B will have the smallest retention time and will elute fastest.
Well, substances with lower boiling points (more volatile) will vaporize more quickly than those with higher boiling points. Thus, the more volatile molecules start moving down the column sooner than the less volatile molecules.
