Question

The vapor pressure of CCl3F at 300 K is 856 torr. If 11.5 g of CCl3F is enclosed in a 1.0-L container, will any liquid be present? If so, what mass of liquid?

P = 856 Torr = 856/760 x 101325 = 114124 Pa

V = 1.0 L = 1.0 x 10-3 m3

T = 300 K

Ideal gas equation PV = nRT

Moles of gas n = PV/RT = 114124 x 1.0 x 10-3/(8.314 x 300) = 0.04576 mol

Mass of gas = moles x molar mass

= 0.04576 x 137.37 = 6.29 g

Mass of liquid = 11.5 - 6.29 = 5.201g

** Can somone check my math and will liqiid be present, if so how much? **

Thanksin advance.

Explanation / Answer

First of all, your work is simply pefect, good thinking, your math it´s OK, I would only change this part:

0.04576 mol, I would put 0.4575 as the complete number is 0.4575575335, its not a big change but idt does a little difference:

0.04575 x 137.37 = 6.28 g

YES THERE WILL BE A MASS OF LIQUID

11.5 (total mass) - 6.28 (mass that will be in vapor form) = 5.22 g, its not a big change but your teacher could prefer this answer, but above anything else, good work!!!
