Question
The horticulturist has achieved the desired result in a particular plant and wants to produce more plants with the same traits. Infer which student makes the best suggestion and explain. Student A suggested that additional plant can be produced by cross breeding the plant with another plant with different traits. Student B said that new plants with the same traits could be produced by cloning only. Student C stated that similar plants can be produced by cloning and by breeding the plant with another plant that has similar traits to achieve the desire results of plants with the same desired traits. Color-blindness is a sex-linked trait recessive to normal sight. A woman with type A blood has a color-blind further with type B blood. She marries a man with normal sight and type O blood. What are the genotypes of the individuals above. Use the following alleles: I^A, I^B, I^O, X^C, X^c, Y The following DNA sequence occurs near the middle of the coding region of a gene: DNA 5'AAT GAA TGG* GAG CCT GAA GGA 3' There is a G to A base change at the position marked with an asterisk. Consequently, a codon normally encoding an amino acid becomes a stop codon. a. How will this alteration influence DNA replication? b. How will this alteration influence transcription? c. How will this alteration influence translation? Cyanide combines irreversibly with cytochrome a_3. How much ATP would a cell make from two molecules of glucose if cyanide poisoning occurred? Explain. Glycolysis yields 2 NADH Krebs Cycle yields 8 NADH and FADH_2 Each NADH yields 3 ATP Each FADH_2 yields 2 ATPExplanation / Answer
12. Answer B. The plants having similar traits as of their parent plants, then their parent plants are said to have homozygous genes for that trait. If the plant containing homozygous gene are selfed then all the offsprings will have similar characteristics as their parent. So in order to produce more plants with similar traits the horticulturist must clone so that the offspings will have similar traits.
(A). Tha plant if bred with another plant with different traits then offspring will have different characteristics depending on the the type of inheritence and dominance shown by the offspring. As another plant can be homozygous or heterozygous for the trait. so, cross breeding is not an option to produce plants with similar traits.
(B) If the plants are cloned then offsprings will have similar characteristics as that of their parents.
(C) Plants with similar traits cannot be produced by cloning and breeding the plant with another with similar traits because if the trait is caused / shown as a result of heterozygocity of that gene then breeding with another plant with similar trait will result in offsprings with different traits. for eg:
if a plant having gene (Rr) is crossed with another plant with similiar trait (rr) the their offsprings will be:
Parents: Rr x Rr
Offsprings: RR Rr Rr and rr
Answer 13. the genotypes of the individuals are as follows:
As blood type B can be because of presence of homozygous B allele (BB) or can be beacuse of (BO). Sex-linked colour blindness is beause of presence of recessive allele. therefore, genotype of the father is XcY and blood type can be IBIB or IBIO.
As O blood type is recessive allele therefore O blood type individuals have genotype (IOIO). while normal eye sight is a dominant trait. therefore, the man has the genotype XCY. Genotype of man is XCY (IOIO).
The woman has the A blood type. Woman with blood type A is can have genotype (IAIA) or IAIO. The woman is colour blind or not is not mentioined therefore the genotype of women can be XCXC or XCXc. The genotype of woman is XCXC or XCXc and (IAIA) or IAIO .
14. (a) with the change in codon from G to A DNA replication is not affected because in DNA replication complementary bases are attached inthe newly synthesized DNA.
(b) Transcription is also not affected with this change of codon because complentary bases are attached and in the resulting RNA Uracil is base complementary to the Adenine base.
(c) Translation is however affected, beacuse the presence of stop codon in the middle of the sequence, translation will stop at that place and full protein will not be synthesized. Therefore, there will be no resulting protein corresponding to this sequence.
15. 2 ATPs are produced as cyanide blocks the complex IV of krebs cycle and no ATP is produced from ATP synthase
