Question

4. Draw a possible reaction mechanism for the acid catalyzed hydrolysis of the glycosidic bonds of an oligosaccaride to give the component monosaccarides.

5. consider the mechanism in question 4. Does the identity of the monosaccarides or anomer of the glycoside significantly affect the mechanism?
a. Does the identity of the monosaccarides affect the reaction? Yes or No
b. Does the anomer of the glycoside affect the reaction? Yes or No
c. Why or why not?

6. If we used sucrase instead of acid to break the glycoside bonds in a disaccaride:
a. Does the identity of the monosaccarides affect the reaction? Yes or No
b. Does the anomer of the glycoside affect the reaction? Yes or No
c. Why or why not?

Explanation / Answer

5. If we use an acid to hydrolyse an oligosachcharide, the identity of monomer doesnt affect the reaction. Because by acid glycosidic bond breaks. But if we use sucrase to break disachcharides it affects the reaction. Because sucrase is an enzyme which is specified to break a certain disachcharide. Sometimes we cant break ither disachcharide using sucrase. By the anomer of glycoside also affect in breaking disachcharides with sucrase because the types of the disachcharides are defined according to the anomer of glycoside
